Nellie Dockrell celebrated her 90th birthday in style at a party hosted by Swords Bridge club on July 10th. She was joined by over ‘Bridge Friends’ in this celebration not only of her birthday but her contribution to the game of bridge in North County Dublin.Over the years Nellie has been a member and played in Brackenstown, Swords, Ashbourne, Portrane, Donabate and St Andrew’s,and St.Cronan’s Bridge clubs. She co-founded St Andrew’s and St.Cronan’s. In 1990 she was involved in setting up the Thursday morning club where she has encouraged and tutored players new to the game to this day. In acknowledgement of her work in promoting Bridge in the area presentations were made by the Presidents of the Dublin North Region and of the Swords clubs. Click here for photos.

Tribute to Nellie Dockrell

Nellie Dockrell was introduced to the Wonderful World of Bridge over 30 years ago when she attended classes in St Finian's School conducted by Swords resident Margaret Kilbride.

She was immediately taken by the game and with a few other keen students studied the game and played a lot among themselves with extra tuition provided by Margaret Kilbride.

Soon a committee was formed that lead to the founding of St Cronan's Bridge Club in 1984.

Nellie was also a founder of St Andrew's Bridge Club in Malahide ( the first non-smoking
club in Ireland) and is still an honoured visitor when she calls there.

She has also had a long association with Brackenstown, Swords, Portrane, Ashbourne and Donabate Bridge Clubs .

In 1990 she was involved in starting the Thursday Morning Club in the Senior Citizens . She is still involved in running this club which is going from strength to strength and serves as a friendly and relaxed introduction to competitive Bridge for beginners and improvers.

To mark a significant birthday and her exceptional contribution to Bridge and the Swords Community more than 60 of her friends attended a “Nelli-bration” in the Senior Citizens Club on 10 July at which she was presented with a plaque by Mary Reid, President of the North Dublin Region of the Contract Bridge Association of Ireland.

Pat Sheridan and Eileen Pennell, (Presidents of Brackenstown and Swords Bridge Clubs resp.) also made a presention on behalf of their members.

The now established annual “Gathering” – the Bridge competition for
newly graduated Bridge learners – has proved to be a worthwhile
exercise.  It breaks the ice for those coming out of a class room
situation.  Players are meeting other than their classmates for the
first time, which can be daunting for a lot of people.  The outing
helps to soothe the nerves and gives people a chance to apply what they
have been learning, in a tailored environment.

The Gathering also introduces new players to club and competition
atmosphere, which hopefully they will follow by progressing into Club
membership.

Overall it is enjoyed by all, but especially by those who are lucky
enough on the day to win a prize.  My thanks to fellow teachers, Ann
and Maureen, for helping to organise the event and Mary Reid for
spreading the word.  At the end of the day it's thanks to the several
teachers who accompanied and encouraged their pupils to come along and
to get involved.

The organisers trust that this is the first of many worthwhile and
enjoyable occasions for all.
