B League Round 1 Report

Round 1 of Kirwan Novice/B League
All matches in the 1st round were completed on Friday when the Iona team of Mary McCann, Carmel Clerkin, Vera Lee and Anna McCabe had a comprehensive victory over the St Gabriel’s Team of Eileen Smyth, Marie Robinson, Shelanne Purcell and Hilary Bates by 15.83 to 4.17. This has left Iona in 2nd place in the League and the top Novice team. I had agreed to set up the game for them, but to my dismay I found that I had to be playing in the match in order to set it up. Luckily Shelanne came to our rescue and set up the games as I talked her through the process while I was driving through town. There were some scary moments for me and for some other drivers!
The Donabate team of Doris Bruederlin, Jane Brennan, Aileen Hanratty and Collette Murphy sit on top of the league with a score of 19.06 after defeating Garvan O’Keeffe’s Sportslink team.
Vanessa Timon’s St Anthony’s team and Fiona Phelan’s Victory team share 3
rd spot on 15.24 each after they respectively “decked the halls” (Christine Madden’s Foxhall and Jerry MacDonogh’s Whitehall). In the Victory/Whitehall match, Victory had to overcome a 3 IMP deficit from the 1st half and only secured victory with the last 3 boards of the 2nd half.
Clare O’Neill’s Broadmeadow’s team is in 5
th place on a score of 14.26 after defeating Simon Keane’s Malahide team. Broadmeadows also had to overcome a 1st half deficit, but there must have been something in the half time tea as they came out with all guns blazing and won the 2nd half by 33 IMPS.
The final game was the tightest of the lot with the last board being the difference between the two teams. St Anthony’s Mary Hynes and Peadar Buckley made a 3NT contract when playing against Broadmeadow’s Liz Butler and Sylvia Kennedy while St Anthony’s Orla Murnane and Ray Wall brought the same 3NT contract down by two when playing against Broadmeadow’s Helen Fagan and Karl Daly.
The beauty of playing on BBO is that you can go into the hands and review your bidding and your play where there is a different outcome between your table and the other table. This offers you and your partner an option to identify possible opportunities to improve your game. If you need any help with conducting a review of this nature, give me a shout.
